The Dixie High School wrestling team had their bell rung Wednesday night as the Cedar City Redmen won the "Battle of the Bell" 69-6. Cedar won four of the six matches and Dixie forfeited the rest. Kolby Lloyd, Andrew Arnold, Mason Williamson and Cameron Williamson won their matches.

SUU Hires New Soccer Coach

Becky Hogan has been hired as the new soccer coach at Southern Utah University in Cedar City. She is from West Jordan, Utah and played college at Nebraska. She also played professionally.

Helen Foster Snow Statue

HELEN FOSTER SNOW
1907-1997

Born and raised in Cedar City, Helen Foster Snow was a journalist, traveler, thinker, and activist who was present during the revolutionary period leading up to the establishment of the People's Republic of China and became a heroine to the people of the war-torn land. She was and still is revered as one who played an important role in rallying the Chinese people to oppose the occupation of the country by the Japanese in the 1930s and as one who helped organize support for the Chinese cause in the capitals of the Western World.

Helen Snow was a prolific writer. Using the pseudonym, Nym Wales, nearly 25 of her 50 books and manuscripts were written on China, and some are considered a primary historical source of the period. The most lasting and important accomplishment of the decade she spent in China was the major role she played in the founding of the Gung-ho industrial cooperatives that spread throughout China, and India as well, serving as a laboratory for democracy, teaching principles of self-government, self-help and mutual endeavor, and resulting in two Nobel Peace Prize nominations.

When she died on January 11, 1997, four public functions were held to honor her (two in China and two in the United States) including one in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing with many of China's leaders in attendance. In Xi'an, China, a permanent exhibition of her life and works was instituted and, some years later, a school was named in her honor and a statue of her erected at the school's entrance.

Samantha Smith was crowned SUU Homecoming Queen.

Chet Higby, from Iron Springs Elementary, won the Iron County School District spelling bee.

Ken Jennings, Jeopardy's winningest contestant, gave SUU convocation speech and ate at the Pastry Pub.

Ray Whittier became the new principal of North Elementary.

Tristan Lamoreaux pleaded guilty to murder of his wife.

The Cedar City Aquatic Center will open Thursday, January 13th for those who have season passes. It will open to all others on the 14th for FREE. The 15th is FREE as well. They will start charging on Monday, the 17th. There will be parts of the center that will remain incomplete, because 7 MILLION DOLLARS was somehow not enough. The outdoor pool is closed for the winter. The ball fields will be available in April.

Aquatic Center & Reservoir

Above is a map showing where the new baseball & softball fields, Leigh Hill fishing reservoir, beach, park and aquatic center will be built just north of Cedar Middle School and Park Discovery. Other pictures include the location of the baseball and softball fields and the fishing reservoir.

The aquatic center will have three swimming pools: leisure, play and competition. There will be a hydrotube slide, lazy river, spa, observations area, bathrooms, offices and more.

The People of Cedar City voted in favor of the 7 million dollar bond on November 4th, 2008. It opened January 2010.

Lake at the Hills is now open for fishing and swimming.

Cedar City based Paiutes awarded $10.5 million in economic development bonds. The bonds are a loan and not a grant. They plan on building a convenience store and gas station in the first phase. A hotel and golf course may follow later on land they own about ten miles south of Cedar.

Tristan Lamoreaux, 24, charged with murder of his wife Misty Lamoreaux. She was shot multiple times in the head in the bathroom of their apartment (University Suites #8). Neighbors say they heard them arguing before the gunshots.

Body found in freezer of Cedar City home near 200 S and 800 W. The body was found in an advanced stage of decomposition. Body identified as Gerald C. Wood. Ruled a suicide.

Mason Kimber, 4, drowns in Lake Powell. The child had evidently been left alone for just a few minutes, when he was discovered unresponsive. Efforts to resuscitate the boy on the scene were unsuccessful. He was flown to a Page, Arizona hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was not wearing a life-jacket. His parents are Clifton and Jessica Froyd Kimber.

Cadin Walker and Zoe Knudsen win poster contest to promote International Migratory Bird Day. Their drawings will be made into posters and placed in the Cedar City area next spring to promote the bird watching event. They were awarded bird feeders and bird seed for their winning art work.

Today at 9:24 am on January 04, 2010 there was a 4.1 magnitude earthquake 8 miles southeast of Cedar City. Other cities in southern Utah that felt the quake include Kanarraville.

Updated: A smaller 3.3 magnitude aftershock happened at 9:55 pm.

Eccles Coliseum Stadium

The Eccles Coliseum is a Utah Summer Games venue for: opening ceremonies, soccer and track & field. The stadium was renovated and renamed to its current name in 1995 after a donation from the Eccles foundation. The stadium includes an olympic legacy monument and cauldron. SUU football games are played here.

The Cafe Rio mexican restaurant was opened in the Providence Center on August 31, 2009. The first Cafe Rio was built in St. George in 1997. The tortillas are made from scratch. The owners of the franchise are Bob and Kathleen Nilsen. After you have purchased ten meals, they offer a free one.

Centrum Arena

The Centrum Arena is located on the campus of Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah. It is home to Thunderbird basketball, gymnastics and volleyball. There are 5,300 seats in the Centrum Arena. Graduation is held here. There are also six classrooms, five art studios, a photography darkroom, a television studio, radio station, psychology laboratories, computer labs, and several faculty offices. The Art, Communication, and Social Science departments are located here. SUTV, and Power 91 (SUU’s radio station) are also located in this building. Before the Centrum was built, basketball was played in the War Memorial Fieldhouse.
